Factsheet
Short pitch
Squalor is a multiplayer extraction game set in a medieval kingdom devoured by plague. Pilgrims walk into the dead zones, take what they can, and try to carry it back out alive. Combat is first-person and lives in the timing: lock onto your foe, read the swing, and the duel becomes a conversation written in steel — one misread and you bleed for it. Loot is hardcore: die in a raid and you may lose everything you carried. The dark is alive — bandits, the risen dead, beasts out of old folklore, and other pilgrims who want exactly what you carry.
Squalor is heavily inspired by the combat of Kingdom Come: Deliverance and For Honor, the extraction loop of Escape from Tarkov, and the dark folklore of The Witcher. The studio's central interest is in worlds that remember — and in players who must outlive that memory.
Key features
- Timing-driven combat: lock-on, reading the swing, parries, the clinch, light-attack combo chains, and stamina that governs every swing.
- Hardcore extraction loop with persistent stash and per-raid loot risk.
- An insurance system that includes a "find your killer" mechanic — coin recovered through revenge, not magic.
- A living world of AI bandits, undead, and beasts of folklore, alongside other pilgrims.
- Skill progression based on technique unlocks, not stat inflation. Knowledge is power; numbers are not.
- A pantheon and bestiary rooted in a deliberate, layered lore — what is shown, what is hidden, what is forgotten on purpose.
- Proximity voice. Friendly fire. Solo or in squads up to four.
About the studio
Mortmain Studio is an independent workshop building dark fantasy games. We do not give out names. We work in the dark on purpose — not because we hide, but because the work matters more than the worker. Squalor is our first game.
